As demand for meat alternatives increases all over the world, fast-food chains are not lagging behind. Plant Power Fast Food, an American restaurant chain specializing in vegan products, welcomed three new member executives in their team and announced the opening of seven new locations totaling the number to 14. The U.S. company saw a striking growth in 2020, despite the challenges caused by the covid-19 pandemic. Plant Power announces an estimate of $14 million in net sales, amounting close to a 50% rise since last year.

Breaking the stereotype and following the customers’ needs, fast food restaurants are incorporating plant-based goods into their offer. This week, Japanese Burger King introduced a vegan variation of their Whopper burger. The patty is said to be made fully with vegetables derived from soybeans but does not lack the brand’s staple smokiness thanks to the fire grilling procedure. It took Burger King two years to develop the vegan alternative for their Whopper, and the company is planning to launch plant-based burgers in over 35 countries within the next two years.

McDonald’s recently announced its plans to launch a meatless sandwich set to be available in 2021, but the company has already tried out limited vegan offers in certain locations. The brand introduced meat-alternatives such as Veggie Burger Deluxe in the UAE which was also 100% halal, while the Norwegian market was granted a Veggie McSpice sandwich.

With an increasing number of declared vegans, the fast-food chains need to adapt to their consumer’s needs. In the US, 3.5% of the population declares to be vegans, a rise of 0.4% within the last two years, while 9.7 million are people dedicated to a vegetarian diet. In the UK for that matter, the number of vegans went up four times since 2014.
