- EU investigation into choline chloride from China.
- Price developments for skimmed milk powder and whey.
- Increase in popularity of pea protein in feed.
- News on mycotoxins and disease outbreaks in global markets.
This overview highlights the latest trends and challenges in the feed industry, as well as key developments affecting the global agricultural market. From changes in the price of key commodities to regulatory action and health risks, we present key information to help you keep up to date with the current state of the sector.
Choline chloride 60% (vitamin B4)
The European Union has opened an investigation into alleged dumping of choline chloride imports from China, following complaints from major European producers. The investigation covers all forms of choline chloride with a minimum content of 30%, including the 60% variant widely used in poultry and pig feed, as well as in human nutrition and the petroleum industry. The EU intends to determine whether low prices from China are harming EU producers, with preliminary findings expected by May 2025 and potential final measures by November 2025.
Skimmed milk powder
Skimmed milk powder (SMP) prices used in feed have recently softened, reflecting seasonal fluctuations in demand and strong milk supply. Skimmed concentrate prices have followed a similar trend, with some reductions seen over the festive period. These changes highlight the importance of staying on top of market dynamics as the industry goes through seasonal changes and prepares for the new year.
Sweet whey powder
The price of sweet whey powder (SWP) for feed has remained stable, even as cheese production slows, reducing the overall supply of whey. While demand remains steady, producers are focusing on higher-value protein products, which is helping to keep SWP prices in check. This balance ensures that SWP will remain a reliable and affordable feed ingredient in the coming months.
Pea protein
Pea protein for feed is gaining popularity as a sustainable and nutritious alternative to traditional protein sources such as soya. Its hypoallergenic properties and high digestibility make it an excellent choice for livestock and pets. Despite stable prices, demand continues to grow, driven by a shift towards plant-based solutions in the feed industry. With continued improvements in production methods and product quality, pea protein will play an increasingly important role in animal nutrition.
NEWS
The Alltech 2024 crop analysis shows a growing risk of mycotoxins for feed producers worldwide, driven by difficult weather conditions. In Europe, late rains have increased contamination of crops such as wheat and straw, while the US Midwest has seen higher levels of mycotoxins due to early droughts followed by heavy rains. In Canada, wetter conditions led to increased risk, particularly in maize silage. With higher contamination reported in many regions, mycotoxin management has become critical to ensure feed safety and protect livestock health.
China has banned direct and indirect imports of ruminant animals and related products from Poland and Croatia due to an outbreak of bluetongue. The decision was taken after cases of the disease were reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health in one Polish province and two Croatian counties. The announcement issued by China’s General Administration of Customs highlights efforts to prevent the spread of the disease.
The US Department of Agriculture issued a federal order requiring nationwide testing of milk deliveries for avian influenza starting on 16 December, following an outbreak that infected more than 700 dairy herds, including 500 in California. The testing, which involves weekly or monthly sampling, will begin in states including California, Colorado and Pennsylvania. Although nearly 60 workers on infected farms have contracted mild cases since April, the CDC says the risk to the general public is low. The order is designed to strengthen surveillance, with farms and processors required to provide raw milk samples and disclose animal movements if infection is detected.
