FAO notes increase in global food prices in June

In June 2025, the FAO Food Price Index increased by 0.5% compared to May, averaging 128.0 points. This is also 5.8% higher than in the same period last year. The main sources of the increase were rising meat, dairy and vegetable oil prices, which outweighed declines in cereal and sugar prices.

Cereal prices declined by 1.5% as a result of a record maize harvest in South America and lower demand for barley and sorghum. At the same time, wheat prices rose slightly due to weather concerns in key exporting countries such as Russia and the USA. Indica rice also cheapened slightly due to weaker global demand.

Meat, dairy and oils are noticeably more expensive

The largest price increase was seen in the meat category, up by as much as 2.1%, marking the highest level for this index on record. Rising demand and supply constraints translated into higher prices for beef, pork and mutton. The exception was poultry, whose prices fell slightly.

Dairy products rose by 0.5%. Butter prices increased the most due to lower supplies from the EU and Oceania and cheese, which rose in price for the third consecutive month. In contrast, milk powder prices declined slightly.

Vegetable oil rose by 2.3%, including:

Sugar prices, on the other hand, fell by 5.2%, reaching their lowest level in more than three years, mainly due to very good crop forecasts in Brazil, India and Thailand.
