High temperatures and lots of sunshine increase the demand for fresh dairy products. After all, what consumer does not dream of strawberries with cream or yogurt made from fresh milk when summer is in full swing? Not everywhere, of course, we know how the seasons work, but in Europe, for example, that’s exactly the case now.
In general, after last week, there is again a lot of uncertainty about the development on the dairy market in the coming days. Rest assured that we will not be quoting Socrates again. Those who were amused by this joke can re-read the newsletter issue from two weeks ago. And those who were not amused by it should be grateful to us (actually, probably not because in that case you most likely were not amused by the joke you are reading right now either).
In the past week, the popularity and price of many dairy products have increased. Among them, Whey Protein Isolate and Whey Protein Concentrate were particularly popular. Their price has increased and, likely, will continue to increase. As always, to learn more about the situation of other dairy products, read on!

The price trend for Cream is causing slight turbulence in the market for Butter, which is still offered around 4.60 – 4.75 EUR/ KG. Despite the increasingly warmer temperatures, it is unlikely that we can expect prices from 5, as stocks in refrigerated and frozen warehouses are still large. Nevertheless, producers behave quite calmly and do not make panic movements, which means that they maintain a fairly stable price level for their raw material.
The GDT index did not indicate which direction Skimmed Milk Powder prices will move in the coming weeks. There is not much interest from non-European markets, which is also reflected in a fairly stable price for skimmed milk. However, it should be remembered that milk (as a liquid raw material) is becoming increasingly scarce and the cost of both drying and labor is still high. For example, managers of Polish dairies complain that the price of electricity in Poland is not competitive with that in Western Europe. For powders, demand from Asia is generally lower, and it is more difficult than before to export anything.
The demand for Cheese is definitely there. After several weeks of increase, the price has stopped and is now holding relatively stable. It is a normal phenomenon for buyers to take a step back after a few weeks to see what direction the market is going. A particularly large number of inquiries come from countries that are considered popular tourist destinations, such as Italy, Greece and Spain, indicating that the summer vacation season has already begun and tourists are, as usual, eager for Italian pizza and Greek salad.
There has been a lot of trading in recent weeks, mainly for WPC 80, as buyers prepare for the upcoming vacations. Producers were willing to tone down and even offered Whey Protein Concentrate below production costs, resulting in more volume being traded than a month ago. However, as far as we know, the major players are already stocked up and have contracts in place through September 2023. For this reason, we do not expect a major price change in the coming weeks.
At the beginning of the week, the price of Cream fell a little and then rose again. The slight increase in Cream, as we mentioned earlier, was due to increased demand for fresh dairy products associated with rising temperatures in Europe. The price of Skimmed Milk Concentrate remains at a similar level to recent weeks.
