Changes in legislation – Christmas Eve public holiday in Poland

Many employees have been waiting for this change for many years – from 1 February 2025, under a new law, Christmas Eve will become a public holiday. Until now, 24 December remained a working day and those wishing to spend it with their families had to use their holiday days. While it was common for many companies to reduce working hours to allow for an early departure home, this was not a mandatory standard.

From 2025, thanks to the introduction of a new law, 24 December will be considered a day off, allowing employees to spend time with their loved ones without having to take a holiday. The amendment was signed into law by President Andrzej Duda, despite some reservations regarding the introduction of a third, additional trading Sunday in December, as well as trading arrangements.

Why is this change so important? The decision taken is of great importance for people who, until now, have had to choose between their professional obligations and the desire to spend Christmas Eve with their families. Thanks to this regulation, from 2025, all employees will gain the right to spend this special day with their loved ones, without having to give up work or holidays.

Changes to trading Sundays

With the new law, there are also changes to trading on Sundays. Employees will be guaranteed every second Sunday off during the month of December, giving them a chance to relax before Christmas. In addition, the introduction of a third trading Sunday in December will affect the way work is organised in the retail industry.

Trade Sunday is a topic that is very controversial, especially in the retail industry. With the new regulations, employees will have more time to rest, which will improve their working comfort and mental health in the run-up to Christmas. This is a significant change, especially in the context of many years where Sunday trading was the norm.
