Judges at centre of Indonesia corruption scandal after palm oil giants acquitted

The Indonesian prosecutor’s office has opened proceedings against three judges who acquitted major palm oil companies: Wilmar Group, Musim Mas Group and Permata Hijau Group. These companies were cleared of corruption charges related to obtaining export permits during the 2022 crude crisis.

Investigators found that the judges may have accepted part of a huge bribe worth a total of 60 billion rupees, or about $3.57 million. The presiding judge of the South Jakarta court, two lawyers and a court employee were also detained. The prosecution has filed an appeal against the controversial verdict, while the companies themselves have so far made no public reference to the case.
