Verbio SE expands plant in South Bend for Bioethanol and Biomethane
Verbio SE, a leader in renewable energy, initiated the expansion of its ethanol plant in South Bend, Indiana, acquired in 2023. The groundbreaking event held on May 23, 2024, marked the transformation of the facility into an innovative biorefinery, integrating bioethanol and biomethane production. Upon completion in 2026, the expanded plant aims to produce over 250,000 tonnes of bioethanol and 850,000 MWh of biomethane annually. This move underscores Verbio’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions in the USA, creating job opportunities and bolstering the local economy.
EU plans new sanctions against Russian LNG exports
EU countries are working on new sanctions against Russia, focusing for the first time on restricting Russian liquefied natural gas exports. Despite broad support, countries such as Belgium, Germany and France want to assess the economic impact. The diplomats want to finalize the 14th sanctions package before the Hungarian EU Council Presidency in July, fearing possible opposition from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The EU, facing the challenge of reducing Russian revenues, is also debating the accountability of EU companies to their distributors in third countries and the alignment of pre-invasion sanctions against Belarus with Russian sanctions, considering temporary exemptions for Belarusian potash exports.
