European Commission presents plan to respond to US tariffs

The European Commission has proposed retaliatory measures against US-imposed tariffs, which could affect up to €95 billion worth of US imports. The proposal is designed to protect EU industry and will be triggered if there is no agreement with Washington before 8 July – the end date of the 90-day suspension of the new tariffs.

Potentially affected products include steel, aluminium, cars, aircraft, machinery, electronic equipment and chemicals. However, the EU stresses that it remains committed to resolving the dispute through negotiations.

Possible impacts on the food industry and EU exporters

A public consultation on the proposed measures will run until 10 June. The list of potential dutiable products also includes goods relevant to the food sector – including processed foods, wine, chocolate, nuts and animal products.

If the measures come into force, they could significantly affect international trade and increase the cost of exports for European producers, including food processing companies.
