Table of contents
  • The monsoon in India started record early – eight days ahead of average, the earliest since 2009.
  • Early and intense rainfall improves soil moisture, allows for earlier sowing and increases potential yields.
  • The Indian Meteorological Department forecasts above-average rainfall, which reinforces the positive outlook for agriculture.
  • A strong monsoon helps stabilise food prices, boost exports (especially rice) and supports India’s economic growth.

Record early rainfall improves agricultural outlook

Monsoon rains arrived in southern India on 24 May – eight days earlier than the multi-year average. This is the earliest start to the season since 2009, which could have a significant impact on crops and agricultural exports. The early rains have already occurred in the state of Kerala, as well as partially in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Mizoram.

Monsoon provides about 70% of India’s annual rainfall. It is crucial for agriculture as almost half of the cultivable land has no irrigation systems. Crops such as rice, soybean, cotton and sugarcane rely heavily on natural rainfall. Early rains enable earlier sowing and improve soil moisture, which increases the chances of higher yields.

Forecasts promise above-average rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that the 2025 season will have above average rainfall – for the second year in a row. The 2024 monsoon brought the highest rainfall since 2020, helping to rebuild production after an earlier drought. The seasonal average for India is 87 cm of rainfall from June to September.

The early and heavy rains increase the chances of stable food prices and a strong export season, especially for rice, in which India is a leader in exports. For India’s $4 trillion economy, a favourable monsoon is a key factor in supporting growth and food security.
