Bluetongue attacks European agribusiness
Summary
Table of contents
  • Mexico has introduced mandatory treatment of cattle with ivermectin before any transport between regions.
  • Farmers warn that the regulations mean higher costs, delays and the risk of losses for producers.
  • The United States has already suspended cattle imports, heightening concerns about the future of exports.
  • Experts predict that disruptions in Mexico could destabilise global agribusiness and drive up meat prices worldwide.

New outbreak on the infection map

At the beginning of October, an outbreak of bluetongue virus in cattle was confirmed in Romania. As a result, the European Commission has extended the ban on the export of these animals and transit through other member states until the end of 2025. The restrictions are intended to limit the further spread of the disease, but at the same time disrupt trade and destabilise the internal market.

The spread of the virus to further regions means that the problem is Europe-wide and the threat to livestock farming and the meat and milk markets is growing. The virus could spread to more countries at any time.

Vaccination problem in the UK

In the UK, the virus has persisted for months, with further infections reported in cow and sheep flocks in recent weeks. Animal movement restrictions remain in place and control zones have been introduced in affected areas. Only vaccinated animals can enter these areas, while the transport of unvaccinated animals requires special permits and testing.

Despite the availability of vaccines, most farmers have chosen not to use them. Low vaccination rates mean that the risk of further outbreaks remains high. Experts warn that bluetongue virus is a deadly disease for animals, leading to tissue damage, circulatory disorders and high herd losses. As a result, not only production but also the stability of the entire European agribusiness is at risk.
