A new risk for livestock farming. Foot-and-mouth disease is not letting up.
Summary
Table of contents
  • German scientists have confirmed that the foot-and-mouth disease virus can survive in animal feed.
  • The results of the study call into question existing biosecurity standards.
  • The feed industry is responding by introducing additional safety controls.
  • EU institutions are considering tightening the rules on imports of raw materials.

Surprising discovery in Germany

German scientists have announced the results of a study that is once again turning the industry’s attention to the issue of feed safety. Experiments have confirmed that the foot-and-mouth disease virus can survive in certain feed components for much longer than previously thought. In samples of soybean meal and dried plant materials, it was shown to be active for several weeks in a cool and dry environment.

Although the researchers emphasise that the risk of virus transmission through feed remains very low, the discovery draws attention to this little-studied aspect of bioassurance. Until now, animal-to-animal contact or livestock transport have been considered the main sources of infection. However, the new data indicate that storage conditions and the origin of raw materials may also play a role in reducing the potential risk.

Virus on the move

The publication of the results was immediately echoed by feed manufacturers and livestock farmers across Europe. The news of the virus’ ability to survive in plant raw materials is prompting companies to re-evaluate their supply chain surveillance quality standards. Increasing attention is being paid to the control of ingredient origin, transport conditions and processing technologies that can reduce the risk of pathogen persistence.

The new data has come at a time when Germany is still analysing the impact of recent foot-and-mouth disease cases. The findings increase the pressure on European institutions responsible for veterinary supervision and feed safety. Decisions on possible changes to import control rules and monitoring of high-risk raw materials are expected in the near future.
