Australian Minister for Agriculture, David Littleproud says that there are “significant opportunities” to expand trade relations with India. The country is projected to be the third-largest economy in the world by 2035 with a population of 1.6 billion citizens. ‘Consumer demand in India for dairy milk products is expected to outpace supply until 2035 and there will also be enormous demand for value-added milk products,’ Mr. Littleproud said.
In 2019 India produced more than 187 million MT of milk in the fiscal year 2019. It was a 6.5% rise over the previous year. The number of milk cows was almost thrice of the entire EU’s cattle. However, the market is highly fragmented and there is a lack of technologies that would allow to efficiently use the raw material. Moreover, recurring floods and droughts make the process of feeding the cattle challenging.
