What is Corn Gluten Meal?

Corn Gluten Meal is a by-product obtained from a wet- milling process of corn during corn starch extraction. Other products produced during this process include starch, germ oil meal, corn gluten feed and corn broth.

After cleaning and removing foreign matter, corn kernels are typically soaked in water containing sulfur dioxide for 24-40 hours at 48-52°C. The role of sulfur dioxide is to weaken the glutelin matrix by breaking inter- and intramolecular disulfide bonds. Soaking at 45-55° C promotes the growth of lactic acid bacteria, which produce lactic acid, lowering the pH of the medium and thus limiting the growth of most other organisms. At the end of the soaking period, the corn kernels contain about 45% water, have given up about 6.0-6.5% of their dry weight to the soaking water in the form of solubles, and are soft enough to be easily loosened with the fingers.

After soaking, the corn kernels are coarsely ground so that the germ can be separated from the endosperm and used for oil extraction. Corn germ oil meal is obtained by extracting the oil from the germ. The remaining water from evaporation is condensed to a steep liquid. The endosperm is subjected to another sieve that separates the fibers from the gluten and starch suspension. The fibers are mixed with the steep liquid and corn germ oil meal to produce corn gluten feed. The fiber-free endosperm is centrifuged to separate the starch and gluten fractions, which have different densities.

Corn Gluten Meal has been used as animal feed for centuries. Corn Gluten Meal has been used as a herbicide since the early 1990s. The substance breaks down over time, so it can be used as a fertilizer thanks to its high nitrogen content.

It is important not to be fooled by the name of the product – in its basic form, Corn Gluten Meal is gluten-free.

What is contained in the Corn Gluten Meal?

The nutrients contained in 60% Corn Gluten Meal are as follows: 90% dry matter, 60% crude protein, 2.5% fat, 2% crude fiber, 12.6% neutral detergent fiber, 6.2% acid detergent fiber, 4.5% calcium and 0.5% phosphorus. The content of total digestible nutrients is 83.0%.

Properties of Corn Gluten Meal

The final product is a homogeneous, fine powder with a yellow-orange color. It has a fresh cereal odor. Corn Gluten Meal has high protein content and a fairly good content of methionine, which is valuable for laying hens. The relatively high content of yellow xanthophylls makes Corn Gluten Meal a popular choice for poultry pigmentation.

When properly stored, Corn Gluten Meal retains its nutritional values for 6 to 12 months, and for optimal pigment content, it should be used up to 3 months after the production date.

Applications of Corn Gluten Meal

Corn Gluten Meal is widely known as one of the ingredients for animal feed. The product is mainly used as a feed raw material for livestock, including fish, as well as pet food. Corn Gluten Meal is valued by the pet food producers for its digestive properties. Feed gluten provides protein, energy and pigmentation for animals. It is used as a possible alternative to other proteins such as Soybean Meal, Fish Meal, or Meat and Bone Meal.

Corn Meal Gluten is also popular for protecting lawns from weeds. Application requires a great deal of skill in terms of timing, but produces satisfactory results. The tricky thing about applying Corn Gluten Meal is that it will not work if applied too early. If applied too late, it would encourage weed growth and development. Corn Gluten Meal is most effective when it attacks weeds just before they germinate. Caution is definitely the key here

Corn Gluten Meal is used not only to control weeds in general, such as dock and knotweed, but also in the fight against crabgrass and dandelions. It is also important to note that Corn Gluten Meal is versatile, meaning that it can be used not only on lawns, but also in flower beds, bulb plant beds and vegetable gardens.
