12th edition of Foodcom PLANT BASED Newsletter
The market situation in Europe remains challenging. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) report, farmers in Ukraine have planted 20% fewer spring crops than they did a year earlier due to the ongoing war. For now, up to a quarter of agricultural producers in Ukraine do not have access to necessary inputs and cannot get fuel for their machinery. In addition, we continue to deal with blocked ports, which forces shippers to take the overland route, causing many delays. Despite good crop conditions currently, we still fear drought and heat waves in July.

We’ve already seen unusually early heat waves in France and Spain that could further stress the wheat crop after a dry spring. On June 19, three more monthly records were broken in France, while the actual exceptional event had shifted westward to Central Europe (Langres 35.3°C, Challes-les-Eaux 37.5°C, Chambery 36.7°C). An expected slowdown in temperatures and rainfall in the region this month should prevent major crop losses. The situation is not so steady in the USA either. After months of drought, many farmers in western Kansas will not be able to sell crops.

Potato protein

New crop Potato Protein prices are a little lower to begin the last half of Q3/first half of Q4. Volumes are quite small at those prices. Prompt or spot prices remain high, revolving around 2600 EUR/MT, but supply is dwindling.

Vital Wheat Gluten

Prices of Vital Wheat Gluten, which reached high levels some time ago, are unlikely to stay as high as they are now.

Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten

Yet again, the Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten price remained fairly stable, at high level, hence deters many buyers. Producers of this compound state that feed grade prices seem to be increasing, and they are not wrong-the situation on the market is somewhat difficult. Feed prices are higher, and imports are increasing much faster than the price of meat. Farmers are pondering what solutions will be more profitable for them. One of the market sources suggests that some buyers are currently working on changing their product formulas and replacing the rather expensive Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten with Soy Concentrate. It’s hard to tell what will come of their efforts. Many manufacturers, who have tried to replace Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten with Potato Protein, have pointed out that it does not dissolve as easily in water.

Dextrose

Dextrose is currently very difficult to find, especially in the case of feed grade, whereas the food grade is still visible. Producers are postponing loads of contracted goods. Corn-based dextrose volumes can be described as quite meager.

Corn Gluten Meal

Corn gluten meal manufacturers are setting high prices, but not as high as they used to. Although prices have risen, we see little slowdown in sales activity. Furthermore, the growth of the aqua feed industry requires a sustainable supply of feed ingredients, especially protein sources. In the search for high-protein feed ingredients, producers have been turning to Corn Gluten Meal more often.

Starches

Even 15% increase in Corn Starch in the last month: we are seeing a lot more volume available in the market, and we are getting a lot of purchase requests for Q3 and Q4. Winter wheat harvest is now underway, so we are seeing a drop in raw milling wheat prices as spring wheat harvest is still months away.

Soy flour

The operations on the market are mostly related to non-GMO products, but we observe a growing interest in GM products due to the price discrepancy of about 100€/ MT.
